THE Qantas Wallabies have continued their undefeated run on Australian soil in 2014 with a comeback from behind 24 to 23 victory over South Africa’s Springboks in Perth on Saturday night.

Israel Folau started the match in fine form for the Qantas Wallabies catching the ball off the kick off and backing it up a minute and a half later as he crossed for the first try of the match. The Wallabies forwards worked hard before fly half Bernard Foley and centre Matt Toomua combined to give Israel Folau a clear run to the line and Australia a 5-0 lead.

The Wallabies continued to run the ball from their own half, racking up 17 runs with the ball in the first 8 minutes. However South Africa countered on a Wallabies ruck and were able to secure a penalty right in front, taking the score to 5-3.

The Springboks continued to attack the Qantas Wallabies in their defensive zone and despite an impressive work rate from the men in gold, eventually South Africa crossed in the corner with a try to winger Cornal Hendricks.

Australia countered quickly with a brilliant run from outside centre Tevita Kuridrani who darted and weaved his way through the scrambling Springbok defence. The Qantas Wallabies continued to attack the line until a penalty was awarded to Australia allowing Bernard Foley to convert a difficult 3-pointer.

A mistake from Australia proved costly off the restart and South Africa was able to retake the lead, leaving the score at 8-11 in favour of South Africa at the 20 minute mark.

The Springboks’ experience at the breakdown showed as Morné Steyn was able to convert his third penalty of the evening, taking South Africa’s lead to 14-8.

The Wallabies continued to attack the South African line and were rewarded with a penalty for a high tackle by the Springboks on the hard running James Slipper, which Bernard Foley converted. A daring attacking run from Bernard Foley on the left flank of the South African defence almost allowed Adam Ashley-Cooper to dive forward for a try, but the wet conditions and the hand of Cornal Hendricks meant the try went begging and South Africa escaped the Wallabies attack.

Both teams traded possession as they fought to establish momentum before half time but the score remained at 11-14 in favour of South Africa.

The second half started well for the Qantas Wallabies with a quick chase and fierce tackling from Wallabies captain Michael Hooper leading to Australia getting a penalty right in front. Bernard Foley did not make a mistake as Australia drew level 14-14 all.

Springboks’ fly half Morné Steyn put South Africa back in the lead with two consecutive penalties, bringing the score to 14-20.

The intense battle between the two teams continued well into the second half as the Wallabies fought against the powerful South African forward pack. Morné Steyn extended the Springboks lead to 23-14 with another accurate penalty kick.

The Qantas Wallabies never dropped their heads as they continued to play attacking Rugby against South Africa. With the Wallabies pounding the South African line, Springbok winger Bryan Habana caught Adam Ashley-Cooper high, which earned the 100-times capped Springbok 10 preposterous minutes in the sin bin as the replays showed no such tackle.

Home town hero Matt Hodgson of the Western Force entered the field with less than 10 minutes remaining, much to the delight of the 25, 718 fans at the match. As the clock continued to count down, the Wallabies threw everything they had at the immense Springboks defence, as wave after wave of Australian attack was repelled.

The brilliance of replacement centre Kurtley Beale created space for the rampaging Tevita Kuridrani who threw off two defenders allowing Rob Horne to score a try, taking the score to 22-23 in favour of South Africa. The pressure kick was again placed on fly half Bernard Foley, who with the experience he has shown throughout 2014, calmly converted the try to take the score to 24-23 in favour of the home side.

Australia held on to possession for the final minute to claim a memorable victory in Perth and return to their winning ways.

THE Qantas Wallabies halted the All Blacks’ world record run of 17 straight wins with a brutal 12-12 draw at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

In front of 68, 627 fans, the Qantas Wallabies were unable to claim victory in the first match of The Rugby Championship and Bledisloe Cup despite being the more dominant side in the second half.

Australia v New Zealand 2014On a wet Sydney night it was clear both sides would be in for a tough battle with strong hands and a solid set piece needed for victory.

Australia started the match well, controlling the early collisions after winning the ball off their own kick off.

New Zealand were given the opportunity for first points in the match in the third minute after an Australian forward was penalised for diving into the ruck. New Zealand fly half Aaron Cruden converted the kick to give the All Blacks a 3-0 lead.

Australian captain Michael Hooper was on to his duties early where his dominance at the breakdown allowed Australia to earn a penalty and gain valuable possession. Kurtley Beale had the opportunity to level the scores in the 11th minute, and he didn’t miss as the score moved to 3-3.

As the two sides fought for early dominance in the set piece, Australian lock Scott Fardy was penalised at the lineout, giving Aaron Cruden another opportunity at goal. The kick sliced to the right of the posts at the southern end leaving both sides locked in a tight tussle for score superiority.

The All Blacks, never deterred, continued probing at the breakdown. Cruden converted another penalty, giving the All Blacks a 6-3 lead over the Qantas Wallabies. As Australia struggled to maintain consistent pressure at the All Blacks’ end of the field, New Zealand extended their lead through the boot of Cruden, taking the score to 9-3.

A daring run by Australian captain Michael Hooper off the base of the lineout, gave the Qantas Wallabies an attacking option inside the All Blacks’ defensive zone. The ever present New Zealand defence desperately pushed the Wallabies out as the Australian outside backs tested their feet.

With minutes to go in the first half, the Qantas Wallabies sent wave after wave of attack on the New Zealand defensive lines as All Blacks’ prop Wyatt Crockett was sent to the sin bin for being offside and disturbing the Wallabies’ ball.  New Zealand was again penalised for defending from an offside position after the halftime siren, but fly half Kurtley Beale was unable to convert the opportunity for points, leaving the halftime the score at New Zealand 9 to Australia’s 3, but with the home side showing plenty of promise in the final stages of the first half.

Australia v New ZealandThe second half started at a frenetic pace as the Qantas Wallabies looked to set the agenda early. Australia was rewarded for that dominance with a penalty kick 25 metres out after All Blacks flanker Ritchie McCaw was caught in an offside position. This time Kurtley Beale made no mistake, taking the score to 9-6 in favour of the visitors.

In the 47th minute, with New Zealand down in Australia’s territory, All Blacks captain Ritchie McCaw was again penalised at the breakdown, allowing Australia to clear the ball. As both sides increased the tempo, New Zealand again infringed at the breakdown allowing the Wallabies to level the score in the 56th minute of the match at 9-9.

The All Blacks struck back soon after though with a further penalty of their own as both sides traded blows at the set piece giving the All Blacks a lead of 12-9.

Australia continued to attack the All Blacks’ defence for several phases and with an overlap looming hooker Nathan Charles pushed a flat ball to winger Pat McCabe who was bundled into touch by Ryan Crotty and Julian Savea.

Replacement Beauden Barrett was sent off almost as quickly as he came on for joining a ruck from the wrong side, leaving New Zealand down to 14 men with little over 10 minutes left in the match. Kurtley Beale converted the points bringing the scores level at 12-12.

Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie brought on his late replacements with Will Skelton and Bernard Foley entering the field of play.

Australia v New ZealandWith the clock ticking the tension inside ANZ Stadium rose as both sides battled to secure the victory. At 12-12 and the clock counting down to less than a minute, the Wallabies had an attacking scrum 22 metres out from New Zealand’s line.

A vocal crowd cheered for the home side as the continued to pound the New Zealand defence, but they were ultimately beaten by the clock with the scores locked at 12-12.
