Week 3

australia AUSTRALIA   18 - 18 NEW ZEALANDnz

Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane - Saturday 20th October 2012
KO: 20:00 AEST HT: 12-6 Att: 51,888

TWO of Rugby’s fiercest rivals fought out an enthralling 18-18 draw in front of a near capacity crowd at Suncorp Stadium for the third and final Bledisloe Cup Test of 2012. With two losses already, the Wallabies had only pride to play for, but New Zealand took the trophy for the 10th consecutive year.

Bledisloe Cup

The Qantas Wallabies and All Blacks threw everything they had at each other for 80 minutes of some of the most intense Rugby of 2012, with neither side able to be separated at the final siren.

In a first half that saw both sides exchange penalty goals, it was the more reliable boot of Wallabies full back, Mike Harris, that ensured the home side took a 6-point advantage into the break.

The Wallabies were the first to put points on the board in the third minute when they were awarded a penalty after the All Blacks failed to roll away at the breakdown.

Harris kicked truly, but the home sides lead lasted just 4 minutes when the All Blacks fly half, Dan Carter, kicked truly after the Australians were punished for not rolling away.

The visitors hit the lead in the 11th minute thanks to the boot of Carter again and then proceeded to place pressure on the Australians with some dangerous attack.

The Wallabies line held firm and in the 28th minute the trusty boot of Harris put the Australians back on level pegging with their trans-Tasman rivals.

Four minutes later the Wallabies hit the lead thanks to another Harris penalty goal; however, 2 minutes later the All Blacks had the chance to even proceedings.

Normally a reliable kick for goal, Carter sent his third penalty goal attempt wide from 35 metres out leaving the Wallabies with a slender 3-point lead.

With just seconds remaining in the first half, All Blacks prop, Tony Woodcock, failed to roll away delivering the Australians with another kick at goal. Woodcock was also sent to the bin for 10 minutes after referee Craig Joubert showed the All Black a Yellow Card.

With the siren sounded Harris lined up his fourth penalty goal attempt for the half with his reliable boot securing 3 points and handing the Wallabies a 6-point, 12-6 lead at half time.

After leading 12-6 at half time, the Wallabies nearly saw their lead cut in half, only to have All Black fly half, Dan Carter, miss his second penalty goal attempt of the night in the 44th minute.

In the 51st minute the Wallabies extended their lead to 9 points after Kurtley Beale knocked over a penalty goal. However, successive penalty goals to Carter in the 53rd and 56th minutes saw the Australian’s lead cut to just 3 points.

The Wallabies had a chance to extend their lead once more but a long range penalty goal attempt by Beale sailed wide leaving the Australian’s up by 3 points.

The All Blacks drew level in the 67th minute thanks to the boot of Carter again and then stretched away from the home side in the 71st minute thanks to another penalty goal.

The trusty boot of full back, Mike Harris, put the Wallabies back on level pegging in the 75th minute with the next 5 minutes some of the most entertaining and heart stopping of 2012.

With the siren gone the Wallabies went through phase after phase pressing closer and closer to the All Blacks 22. After losing the ball following more than a dozen phases, the All Blacks counter attacked taking themselves to within the Australia 22.

With both Carter and All Black replacement fly half Aaron Cruden waiting for a drop goal attempt either side of the ensuing ruck, it was Carter who had the chance to snatch an historic victory. As the 51,888 crowd held their collective breath, the drop goal attempt from just 30 metres out sailed agonisingly wide to see the sides unable to be separated at full time.
