Sunday 6th March 2011 KO 3pm GMT
An all star charity game, Pacific Barbarians vs Australian XV is being played in aid of victims of the recent southern hemisphere tragedies the Queensland Floods in Australia and the Christchurch Earthquake in New Zealand.
The brand new invitational team the Pacific Barbarians will be taking to the rugby pitch on Sunday March 6th for their first ever competitive match.
The Pacific Baa-Baa’s, made up of players with origins in the Pacific Islands, will be led by All-Black legend Jerry Collins and will feature other greats such as fellow all Black Filo Tuatia, Doug Howlett and Sam Tuitupou. They’ll take on an Australian XV inspired by former Wallaby captain George Smith and will feature Matt Henjack and Saimone Taumoepeau. The match will take place at Old Deer Park, Richmond at London Welsh Rugby Club.

Speaking ahead of the match George Smith, Australia’s most capped forward, said: “This will be a fantastic opportunity for Rugby to do its bit to help the victims of these two disasters. Many, many people in rugby know people directly affected by the recent tragedies in these two great rugby nations and all the boys involved are passionate to do their bit to help.”
When asked about locking horns with his old adversary, the Pacific Barbarians skipper Jerry Collins said: “George and I have been in some great games in the past and I can’t wait to match up with him again. We’ll be bringing some great players from the Pacific together to play some good rugby in our own style, and hopefully help the victims of the floods and the earthquake as much as we can.”
The event is the brain child of Epeli Taione, [Tonga, Pacific Islanders, London Welsh] one of the most colourful characters in the game who apart from his rugby prowess is also famous for his role in Invictus. Although he is one of the hardest players on the pitch, the big hearted Tongan is equally committed off the pitch.
“We have been developing the concept of the Pacific Barbarians for some time,” commented Taione. “We can’t think of a more fitting occasion to unleash our new team onto the rugby world than in a match designed to raise some serious money for these two Southern Hemisphere disasters that have touched so many people in our rugby family.”
